They Said

”Free and fair,” they said. “There will be no violence.” And yet, here I am, cowering in a shop next to twenty people I’ve never met, afraid that a bullet will miss its mark and come hurtling towards me.
“Shoot on sight” they said. “That is what you should do to anyone caught stealing ballot boxes.” And yet, the ballots lie here, scattered and burning on the ground, with no one here to enforce this law.
“No casualties” they said. They lied.
“It was successful,” they said, “free and fair” and yet all I remember is screams of fear.
