The World was Unkind

Dike watched the man totter up the sidewalk. Mumbling, hoary-haired, he was bent even lower by the Ludo boards he gripped.
Dike wondered why the sun showed him no reverence but burnt him darker still, why the pebbles did not skid off to avert his tripping, why the speeding cars did not charitably stop to buy his wares.
Well, he, Dike, had no money to take a bus home after his failed interview. He, Dike, cannot help.
The man got closer. Deciphering his mumbles, Dike stiffened: ‘The world was unkind’. Their eyes met and Dike saw himself at seventy.
