“Kabiyesi o!” Adunni joined all subjects in chanting. He was the beloved King. She was just the daughter of a yam seller. As she rose to leave the palace, a messenger gave her a note, from the King. She was being summoned. “Kabiyesi, k’ade pe lori o!” He gazed at her and smiled. “Surely, such a treasure belongs with a King. Be mine!” She was stunned. Here was her ticket out of poverty, way to pay for her mother’s labor. But, she was ‘broken in’, shamelessly by her uncle. “I accept, my Lord!”, because being poor was much worse.
