The Girl Child

“Am I happy now?” I asked myself, starring at the little bundle of joy that filled my arms.
The coolness of the mud hut and the warmth of the baby boy almost making me forget my sorrows.
“Why are you not happy, my Queen?” the midwife said, as she gave me a drug to help with the pain, “you have finally given the King the Prince he almost killed you for.”
I said nothing as I stared again at the boy who looked very much like the King and the maiden who now held my baby girl in her bosom.
