Nkemdiche is a Bad Name

At birth, her mother called her Nkemdiche because her siblings had all died at birth, but she survived. Her mother was also optimistic that her daughter was carved out for great things.

But other people saw her name as a curse. In Igbo land, it is said that ‘Nkemdiche is a bad name.’ Nkemdiche means ‘mine is different.’ People didn’t just understand the figurative meaning of that name.

It was not until Nkemdiche came to the limelight by being the only female writer in Nigeria to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, that people fully understood what her name meant.
