The instant we locked eyes, the world vaporized. I married my sweetheart, a soldier, one year before the Nigerian civil war broke out.
Six months into the conflict, while pregnant, I received word that he had been captured by death. I was so brokenhearted. No other man could quench his fire – as it burned in every breath I drew.
Twenty-five years later, my daughter’s fiancé invited us over for dinner. As we commenced eating, the young man’s stepfather joined us at the table.
I was stunned. Standing before me, radiating ineffable joy at our incredible reunion, was my sweetheart.
