Every Day of My Life

The drums sounded. It was time to work.
We worked from dawn till dusk, only getting breaks at noon.
My dark skin was slick from the incessant sun, biting through my semi-naked back.
My back ached terribly, causing total numbness from the pain. But I worked anyway.
We didn’t speak to each other, couldn’t if we wanted to. For our lips were sealed, literally with padlocks, removing it only when it was time for food.
I only knew this life.
A life where revolutionaries had slaves while fighting for freedom.
And until a miracle happens,
I’ll die here.
