As a child, I dreamt of going to college, studying to become a doctor like the whites my mother worked for, getting rich and taking my family out of the slums we lived in.
My mother told me it was possible, that all my dreams would come true if I worked hard enough.
I am now nineteen years old and I’ve been working hard all my life, yet I’ve not been able to do any of the things I dreamed about. Right now I’m working really hard at the job my mother left, cleaning for the Bradley’s.
