Done with my hair, I return downstairs to join my in-laws for dinner.
Iya Tomi nods all through the meal pleased with my cooking.
“It’s good to see you living well and happy. Olorun has favored your marriage.”
I put on my practiced smile and keep my wrists out of sight.
“We are thankful to God.” Dayo smiles at me. When he squeezes my hand, one of the scars on my back blazes to life. Number 49 is not as new as the ones on my wrists. But the memory of Dayo’s belt on my skin is ever fresh.
